With lightning strikes across the region, Humboldt-Del Norte Cal Fire crews are gearing up for this year's fire season.
According to officials, crews assisted the U.S. Forest Service in responding to at least four smaller fires in the Six Rivers National Forest Tuesday.
At the same time, other personnel have been busy training seasonal firefighters in preparation for another potentially deadly fire season.
"We'll assist [the Forest Service] as much as we can, feasibly, and keep enough resources in case we have new starts here from the lightning," Cal Fire Humboldt Del-Norte Battalion Chief Ron McLaughlin said.
According to McLaughlin, the Humboldt-Del Norte unit is more than doubling its resources next week.
Starting Monday, the unit will have staffed an additional six engines with returning firefighters, who began training yesterday.
