After a prolonged fire fight, a greater alarm blaze at a commercial building that spread to its roof in South Los Angeles was extinguished Wednesday. Firefighters were called at 1:30 a.m. to 3011 S. Main St. and East 30th Street where they encountered flames that possibly began in the mezzanine of the 100-by-200 foot building, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart. Fire crews cut two ventilation holes in the roof in order to control the flames inside the building. It took 106 firefighters 1 hour and 15 minutes to put out the fire. Stewart said the entire unit is a total loss with most of the roof collapsed into the building. The LAFD Arson unit was called to the scene to conduct an investigation of the origins of the fire.
