A fire destroyed an unoccupied commercial building Monday night in Union City, a battalion chief with the Alameda County Fire Department said Tuesday.
Crews responded at 8:30 p.m. to Union City Boulevard and Whipple Road, where flames were breaching the roof when they arrived. "It was well-involved when we got there," Battalion Chief Brian Sheehan said by phone Tuesday.
Firefighters kept the fire to one alarm. No one was injured and no other buildings were damaged, Sheehan said.
He didn't know the cause late Tuesday morning, but said a homeless encampment inside the building may have started the blaze.
A concrete manufacturing company may have used the building in the past.
