PHOTO: Canon City firefighters are investigating what sparked a fire at a vacant motel early Monday morning.
Firefighters said they responded to a fire in the 200 block of Royal Gorge Boulevard around 12:20 a.m. Crews reported the vacant motel-type structure was heavily involved with fire when they arrived, and they started attacking the fire from multiple sides of the building.
According to firefighters, it took about an hour to get the fire under control. Crews are expected to be on scene throughout the morning, Lt. Shane Roberts said in a news release. Roberts is the Canon City Area Fire Protection District’s spokesperson.
Crews said there were significant power outages in central Canon City because of the fire. Around 3 a.m., Roberts said power had been restored to all customers except for the building involved in the fire.
