The wildfire burning on Rampart Range, dubbed the 300 Fire, is now 100 percent contained, firefighters reported late Monday.
The fire sparked two miles off of Rampart Range Road, northeast of Woodland Park, and blackened seven acres. Officials with Colorado Parks and Wildlife believe the fire spread from an unattended campfire.
Officials found the fire on May 27 at about 2 p.m., but believe it could've been burning a few days before that.
"There is dirt around the campfire; however, the campfire was left warm. It has likely been burning for a few days and that hot ash, when it has been windy up here, has been blowing outside the campfire ring and it blew out and the ash ended up in the pine needles adjacent to the fire ring," Dawn Sanchez, the spokesperson for the 300 Fire, told Gazette news partner, KKTV.
