City residents will have the opportunity to get a new smoke detector installed for free April 27 as New Haven firefighters and officials team up with the Red Cross for the annual Sound The Alarm campaign. The rationale for the effort is simple, Mayor Toni Harp and Fire Chief John Alston said Tuesday: smoke detectors help save lives. “I’m so proud of all the city’s first responders, and their partnerships with agencies like the Red Cross. I’m so grateful for the help you provide — the help is most desperately needed,” said Harp. “The motivation behind this initiative is a firm belief that the best and most effective way to fight a house fire is to prevent it in the first place.”
“We want you to understand the importance of these alarms being posted in your homes,” said Alston, addressing the public. “Early detection — and early alarms — save lives.”
