Town officials in Ellington, South Windsor, Tolland, and Vernon have come to an agreement 10 years in the making to provide fire marshal services at no cost when one of their towns is in need. So far, the Fire Marshal Mutual Assistance Intermunicipal Agreement has been signed in Ellington, Tolland, and Vernon. In South Windsor, Mayor Andrew Paterna said Thursday the Town Council is open to the proposal but it has yet to be voted on. Officials say the agreement — which offers fire marshal coverage when the local fire marshal is unavailable or needs help investigating a serious fire — is a win for residents since departments can help one another at no cost while providing an extra layer of security to each department. Each municipality would cover expenses for its fire marshal’s work outside of town, Tolland Fire Chief John Littell said.
