A vehicle that caught fire in the center lane of I-95 forced the closure of the highway Tuesday night.
Fairfield firefighters said at 10:24 p.m., the Emergency Communications Center received multiple calls and dispatched Engine 4, Engine 1 and Rescue 1 with Car 3 to a motor-vehicle fire on Interstate 95 in the area of Exit 19.
“The vehicle was fully involved and in the center lane when responders arrived,” firefighters posted on Facebook.
“With the assistance of the State Police, traffic was closed for a period of time in the southbound direction, so responders could safely operate. “The driver of the vehicle fled the accident scene on foot and Westport Police was asked to assist in locating the driver in the surrounding area.”
Assistant Chief Erik Kalapir thanked the traveling public for their patience.
