Typically it’s the firefighters that do the battling. They rush into homes that have gone ablaze, rescue anyone from the building who may be in danger and work to extinguish the flames. Their spouses are usually the ones away from the scene and not in harm’s way, beyond any worry they may have for their loved ones. But when the wife of New Britain firefighter Brian Reeves was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2019, the department decided to help with that battle. “It was humbling,” said Katie Reeves, 45, when the fire department donated toward her $2,300 in funds they collected. The department has donated funds to the Connecticut Breast Health Initiative in years past for their Race in the Park at Walnut Hill Park. This year, they sold pink shirts to collect this year’s funds, which were donated to the Reeves.
