A seriously injured driver had to be extricated from a car that crashed into a wooded area off the shoulder of eastbound Interstate 84 during Thursday morning rush hour.
The crash involving a Chevrolet sedan happened between Exits 8 and 9 around 7:15 a.m., causing traffic jams and lane closures that backed up traffic past Exit 7.
Using Jaws of Life, firefighters cut the doors and roof off the heavily damaged vehicle and extricated the driver — the sole occupant — in about 25 minutes, according to Bethel’s Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Company.
The driver was transported to Danbury Hospital with serious injuries, as fire crews stood by to assist Modzelewski’s Recovery & Heavy Hauling in removing the vehicle from the woods.
The crash caused traffic delays of at least 20 minutes, according to traffic reports.
