Firefighters extinguished a blaze early this morning at a School Street home, according to a fire department Facebook post. They received the call at 5 a.m. and found a small fire at the rear of the home which extended from a wood burning stove. Damage was isolated to a small section of the home and there were no injuries. Other departments assisting in fighting the fire included Durham Volunteer Fire Company, Westfield FD, and Killingworth Volunteer Fire Co. The department also received help from Hunter's Ambulance Service, Inc. and Valley Shore Emergency Communications. Fire officials warned: "If you have not already, be sure to have your chimney inspected annually and cleaned as needed. Remember to burn dry seasoned wood to prevent the buildup of creosote and make sure your smoke detectors are tested and working."
