Although the pandemic initially threatened to throw cold water on their plans, members of the West Stafford Fire Department are preparing to celebrate the department’s 75th anniversary with a free event Saturday. The event will take place at the fire station at 144 W. Stafford Road from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lt. Brandon Kerr, who chaired the planning committee, said speakers, including First Selectwoman Mary Mitta and Chief Joseph Lorenzetti, will open the event. At 1:30 p.m., members of the department will conduct extrication and water diving drills to show how they rescue people trapped in cars or drowning, he said. Food trucks from local restaurants Backroads Smokin’ BBQ, Kona Ice, and Flippin’ Food, will be onsite, and there will be a musical performance by the cover band Long Way ‘Round, which Deputy Chief Joseph Comarella performs with as the guitarist.
