Southington’s recent decision to offer an increased tax break for volunteer firefighters makes perfect sense as part of an effort to draw more residents to the department and to show appreciation to those who serve.
Like many other towns, in Connecticut and nationwide, that have both volunteer and career firefighters, Southington has sometimes struggled to maintain its roster of volunteers, although the department recently got a group of new officers following the retirement of former Chief Richard Butler, and is now at full strength.
Nevertheless, the long-term trend is clear and the need to recruit and retain volunteers is ongoing.
The abatement also represents the town’s recognition of the sacrifice made by the volunteers.
“This is just another example of how we can support them,” said Fire Chief James Paul.
“We appreciate them so much,” said Town Council Chairwoman Victoria Triano.
