First responders rescued a driver after his pickup truck was found partially submerged about 30 feet from shore Monday night, police said.
Around 7 p.m., police received a call about a crash on Banks Road. Arriving officers found the vehicle in the pond with the driver still inside and began rescue efforts to pull him to shore, police said.
Once the driver was out of the vehicle, he got stuck in mud and was freed again by police and firefighters.
The driver, identified as a Sandy Hook resident, allegedly hit a vehicle on Route 136 and fled the scene, according to police. The driver of the vehicle that was hit followed him to try to get him to pull over, police said. The Sandy Hook man told police he was unfamiliar with the area, lost control of a curve and crashed into the water, officials said.
The drivers of both vehicles were taken to the hospital by medics.
