The Stamford community and fire department are mourning the death of retired Deputy Fire Chief William "Billy" J. Smith III.
Smith died on Oct. 27, the Stamford Fire Department announced. He was 71.
Smith was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and moved to Stamford at a young age, according to his obituary. He graduated from Stamford High School before attending the University of Connecticut.
Smith joined the SFD in October 1977 and rose through the ranks to become assistant chief, before retiring as deputy chief in 2013, his obituary said.
"Known for his dedication to the department and his fellow firemen, he truly enjoyed serving the city for 35 years," his obituary continued. "Known for his love of rock n’ roll, a good cheeseburger and great conversation, Billy will be remembered for his huge heart and desire to help others."
