The New Haven Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its own.
Off-duty firefighter Thomas Mieles, 27, was struck and killed on Interstate 91 just south of Exit 8 near New Haven around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday.
State police said Mieles pulled over in the left lane after he had been involved in a separate crash. Moments later, two vehicles pulled over ahead of Mieles in the left lane and attempted to help him.
A third vehicle approached the three stopped cars, struck Mieles’ car, and side-swiped the other two vehicles. After being side-swiped, one of the vehicles swerved into the left lane and struck Mieles.
He suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
