Follow Up: Investigation underway into Newark Acme fire
The Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the source of a fire that caused significant smoke damage to the Acme grocery store at The Grove complex in Newark Sunday night, March 24, 2024. Aetna Hose Hook and Ladder Fire Company crews arrived around 10:45 p.m. for the report of a sprinkler activation alarm, and found a smoke condition throughout the store. Aetna fire officials said an active fire was located and extinguished in about ten minutes; however, an air boat from South Bowers Fire Company in Kent County was called in to aid in ventilating the store. No one was injured. The fire marshal's office is estimating damage at $250,000.

Newark Acme Store Damaged By Fire
Just before 10:45 Sunday evening, firefighters responded to reports of a fire inside the Acme store at The Grove in Newark. Upon arrival, crews reported smoke in the building. Crews began their attack on the fire and were able to bring the fire under control shortly after arrival. The fire damage was contained primarily to one aisle, with additional smoke and water damage throughout the store. Despite the store being open, no injuries were reported, thanks to the activation of the sprinkler system that helped contain the fire until firefighters extinguished it. The incident is under investigation, with initial reports suggesting juveniles may have sparked the blaze. This fire comes shortly after the store underwent significant renovations. Firefighters from Aetna, with the assistance of several mutual aid companies worked for over an hour at the scene.
