Utility crews in Newark and New Castle were left scrambling Wednesday morning, August 14, 2019 as a result of a pair of line breaks. The Newark water department was called out to South Chapel Street (Route 72) before 8 a.m. for a water main break south of the I-95 overpass. Officials say the break was at the southern edge of their service area and about thirty residential and business customers were affected. The break was repaired and service restored by 2 p.m. Meanwhile, Wilmington Manor firefighters were called out just after 10:30 a.m. for a reported outside gas leak behind the Sprint store off of Route 13 near the New Castle Farmers Market. Fire officials reported a six inch gas line had been ruptured. Delmarva Power officials isolated the leak and the situation was declared under control in about 90 minutes.
