After three deadly fires in Sussex County just over a month into the new year, one local fire company is stepping in to help.
The Ellendale Fire Company will make rounds Friday evening to ensure that everyone in the town has a working smoke detectors. This comes after investigators found that none of the homes where those deadly fires took place had functioning alarms.
According to firefighters, the alarms help them locate fires quickly and give occupants a better chance of getting out safely.
"We're amping up our efforts by going door-to-door in the community, and we'll go door-to-door Friday night and check to ask if their smoke detectors are O.K.," Ellendale Fire Company spokesman Jay Jones said.
