An early-morning, two-alarm fire heavily damaged a two-story home in the New Castle-area.
The fire call came in at the home on Bunker Hill Road at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2019, the coldest day of the winter thus far. Temperatures hovered Thursday morning at 5 degrees.
Firefighters arrived on scene to find thick black smoke shrouding the home.
A mayday was declared for a few firefighters, who were in the basement, where the fire originated. They were quickly extracted and treated by New Castle County paramedics at the scene.
The Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office, which is investigating the cause, says a total of three firefighters were taken to Christiana Hospital for injuries, including one for smoke inhalation.
St. Francis Hospital's rehabilitation unit was at the scene providing warm beverages to the firefighters combating this blaze amid difficult conditions.
It was more than two hours before the fire was declared under control.
