To meet the needs created by rapid population growth in its fire district, the Milton Fire Department announced Tuesday it has begun a year-long capital campaign and construction project that will more than double the department's square footage.
After considering options, the board and membership of the MFD, voted to expand from 12,422-square-feet to 26,132-square-feet on its existing Front Street site in Milton.
“Our investigation to purchase land and complete all-new construction revealed that it would have cost more than twice as much as our addition and renovation project,” said MFD President Johnny Hopkins.
The central location and solid construction of its existing building were also factors, Hopkins said.
The fire department hopes to raise at least $2 million of the $4.6 million total cost via private donations, through a campaign that began in September 2019.
