A malfunctioning appliance cord is to blame for a fire in downtown Milton Tuesday afternoon. The fire broke out on Federal Street around 12:15 PM. A man on the scene told firefighters he was asleep inside when the fire broke out on the outside deck. The man reported he tried to put the fire out with water, but that only seemed to ignite the flames further, so he ran outside with his dog. The Delaware State Fire Marshals' office says although the building--which houses apartments and businesses--was occupied at the time, no one was hurt. Fire damage is estimated at $100,000. Firefighters from Milton, Ellendale, Lewes, and more were called for mutual aid.
