The Delaware Volunteer Firefighters Association turned 100-years-old on Wednesday. DVFA was formed at a meeting in Milford on February 24th, 1921.
DVFA President Norman "Jay" Jones says the goal for the anniversary is to highlight 100 years of service and to raise awareness for how the community can get involved. He says fire departments always need volunteers, but that COVID-19 has caused them to struggle more than they already do with fundraisers and recruitment events canceled.
The pandemic has also canceled plans to celebrate DVFA's first convention in Laurel and first meeting in Milford.
"Where it started off with 9 companies in Milford, Delaware 100 years ago today, we are now 60 companies strong throughout the state with an associate company," Jones says. "We have all the fire companies in the state of Delaware that come together, work together to progress our service."
