A large house fire completely destroyed a home in Cantonment on Wednesday, leaving it’s five occupants homeless. The home on Booker Street was just slightly over a mile and a half from the nearest firehouse, station #4, but the Escambia County Fire Department reports it had to send units several miles away in Ensley to the scene. That response time taking about 11 minutes. Fire Chief Rusty Nail said the average response time if a unit had been at station #4 would have been four minutes. Chief Nail said the delay was due to units from station #4 being sent to a medical call in Molino. He said there were no firefighters available up there because they couldn’t get in touch with any of the volunteer firefighters who serve that area.
