The Key Largo Fire Rescue & Emergency Medical Services District board has asked local firefighters to form a fact-finding committee to examine becoming employees of the district itself. The firefighters are currently employees of the Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department, a private company contracted by the district for fire and rescue services. Recent changes by the contractor have prompted the possible change in employers. The committee should gather facts pertinent to establishing firefighters as direct employees of the district, gather facts regarding ambulance corps personnel becoming direct employees of the district and explore forming a new organization with which the district could contract for fire and emergency medical services.
