A North Port police officer rescued his canine partner after their patrol vehicle caught fire Tuesday afternoon, the department reports.
According to police, officer James Mills was conducting a traffic stop in the parking lot of the SunTrust Bank at U.S. 41 and North Port Boulevard when his vehicle began to smoke. Mills got his K9 partner, Jett, out of the vehicle.
North Port firefighters responded and put out the fire, which they contained to the engine compartment. No injuries were reported.
The fire is under investigation.
