As Hurricane Ian hits land, its effects can be felt all across Florida. Sarasota County is experiencing Ian's impact, with heavy rainfall. Only 50 miles away, Hurricane Ian made landfall near Fort Myers. As sustained winds hit 45 mph in Sarasota County, county officials made the difficult decision to pull emergency crews off the streets. This means those who decided to stay in Sarasota to tough out the hurricane will be on their own. An extreme wind warning was issued in Sarasota County, but until the heavy winds and rain subside emergency crews won't be able to assist residents. Public schools in the county have been turned into emergency shelters and have reached 15-percent capacity.
