Grady County firefighters will be stocked with new life-saving equipment following a vote by the Board of Commissioners.
Commissioners voted last week to approve a $31,000 purchase of new self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), which provide firefighters with breathable air in smoky conditions.
Only two companies in Georgia offer the brand of SCBA that the Grady County Fire Department uses. Fire Chief Richard Phillips said the department sticks with the same brand to avoid older gear becoming completely obsolete.
“We try to keep it as uniform as we can so if you grab something off of a truck that’s older, it’ll still match up with the new stuff,” Phillips said.
