25 additional first responders have been officially welcomed to the Savannah Fire Department. After six months of recruit school, Savannah Fire Department has what Chief Wayne Ifill said is the most highly certified firefighter class in department history. "In the past, the other classes came out firefighter 1, firefighter 2, hazmat awareness, hazmat operations, and within the last three years we started added EMT to that class. Well, this class received that and an additional certification of hazmat technician," Ifill said. Ifill said this is pivotal as COVID-19 continues to affect the community and first responders are in higher demand. "Even though we’re helping to combat COVID, we’re also being faced with it ourselves, so when we have personnel who are under our own COVID protocols, we have someone else now that can take their place and continue to deliver the proper service to this community," he said.
