Big Island firefighters responded to a propane leak at Kipimana Street between Melekahiwa Place and Kalapa Place, or Shipman Industrial area. The first fire unit responded at 11:04 a.m. and upon arrival firefighters saw a large vapor cloud in the area moving with light winds. The source of the leak was found to be a torn off fill valve located at the bottom of a 20' LPG shipping container. HFD and HPD units closed all traffic to the Shipman Industrial area and neighboring properties were instructed to shelter in place and extinguish any outside flame/industrial sources. The HFD Hazmat unit used monitors to assess the flammable zone of the propane and dispersed the cloud with water fog nozzles.
