The Kauai Fire Department says a fire that broke out on the grounds of the old Kekaha Sugar Mill Sunday night left an unoccupied structure destroyed.
No injuries were reported, but damages were estimated at roughly $50,000 to the structure and its contents.
The fire was reported at about 8 p.m. Sunday. Firefighters from the Waimea, Hanapepe, and Lihue stations, along with Rescue 3 personnel and the on-duty Battalion Chief worked together to contain the blaze along Kekaha Road. Police closed a portion of Kekaha Road for about three hours. Once on scene, firefighters moved a collapsed metal roof to address multiple fires hidden underneath. They were able to contain the blaze within a half-hour, and successfully prevented flames from spreading to other structures or brush areas nearby.
