Honolulu firefighters responded to a building fire in Unit G of Kalihi Valley Homes on Kalaunu Street. The first fire unit arrived at 10:22 a.m. to find a two-story residence with light smoke emanating from the front and rear of the structure. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control at 10:31 a.m. and it was fully extinguished at 10:36 a.m. A woman was reportedly woken by her daughter and who had heard their smoke alarm sounding. The woman was able to escort her five children out of the structure safely and the Red Cross is assisting the displaced family. Fire Investigators determined that a child playing with a lighter caused the fire. Fire damages are estimated at $77,000 to the structure and $2,000 to its contents. When children are not supervised as well as have ready access to matches or lighters, their likelihood of playing with fire increases.
