Hawaii Fire Chief Darren Rosario said that David Mahon was recently promoted to captain in the Hawaii Fire Department. In his 18 years of service in fire rescue and as an emergency medical technician, he likely had a hand in saving thousands of lives on the Big Island according to Rosario. "Yesterday we lost a very valuable man to our department, but most importantly, a very important father, son, and significant other," Rosario said. Mahon was killed on Highway 190 just south of the 14-mile marker. Police said a 2006 Honda Pilot SUV driven by a 21-year-old Kamuela man overtook several cars in a no passing zone and hit Mahon who was driving northbound. He was transported to Kona Hawaii Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:37 p.m.
