Honolulu Fire Department honors good Samaritans for risking their lives

VIDEO: The Honolulu Fire Department honored 18 civilians and firefighters on Wednesday for risking their lives to save others. One off-duty firefighter was honored for using a surfboard leash to create a tourniquet for a pedestrian injured in a crash. A civilian was honored for preventing a burning pot on a stove inside an apartment from spreading. Firefighter Nathan Ihu, jumped into action while off duty in Kaneohe in June. "On June 26, 2019 Firefighter Ihu noticed his neighbor's home was on fire. He scaled a fence, evacuated the household members out of the structure and utilized a garden hose to contain the fire. Upon the HFD's arrival, he continued to assist with hose deployment until the fire was extinguished," said Honolulu Fire Department Battalion Chief Jarin Wong.
