No injuries were reported after a home in Hilo caught fire shortly before 1 p.m. on Sunday. Responding to the 12:47 p.m. alarm, firefighters arrived several minutes at a property off Haihai Street, near Alohalani Drive, to find a single-story post and pier home with fire and smoke emanating from its front side, according to a press release from the Hawaii Fire Department. The flames were also spreading toward the rear of the home. Firefighters quickly took over the operation from bystanders who were trying to douse the flames with garden hoses. With the assistance of 20 fire personnel, the fire was listed as under control at 1:04 p.m. The fire was declared out at 3:06 p.m. after HFD crews ensured any hidden pockets of fire and heat were out using a thermal imaging camera. No injuries were reported, according to the department.
