Fire officials said an early Tuesday fire in a stream gulch in Kalopa Mauka was intentionally set. Responding to the 5:55 a.m. alarm, Hawaii Fire Department firefighters arrived at the intersection of Kalopa Mauka and Keahua roads to find a man in his 30 attempting to extinguish the fire. The man reportedly told the first responders he was trying to burn green waste and then left the scene as firefighters took over the operation. The “deep-seated fire” was burning a mixture of green waste, household trash and construction materials, including metal siding, PVC piping and electrical conduits. The fire was declared extinguished about three hours after firefighters arrived on the scene. No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened.
