Nine people were displaced when a fire damaged a two-story home in Kihei on Saturday afternoon, according to the Maui Fire Department.
The fire was reported at 1:32 p.m. at 278 Wainohia Street. Most of the severe damage to the 2,200-square-foot home was contained to a 400-square-foot garage on the first story that had been converted into a room, Assistant Fire Chief Michael Werner said.
Five of the nine occupants were at home at the time of the fire, and all were able to escape, Werner said.
The fire was brought under control at 2 p.m. Damages were estimated at $50,000 to the structure and $35,000 to its contents.
No injuries were reported. The Red Cross was working on finding accommodations for the displaced residents.
