On Tuesday, residents of Hibiscus Drive gathered to remember their neighbor Lois Cain and police officers Tiffany Enriquez and Kaulike Kalama as well as the families who lost their homes. Construction is ongoing on the historic homes that were destroyed during the tragedy one year ago. With special permits and the pandemic, it's taking a bit longer to rebuild them, but it will take even longer to rebuild this community... still shaken, still full of sorrow and even some anger at what they feel was preventable. People here tell me this special place will never be the same, but they are healing. On that Sunday morning, exactly a year ago, police say Cain was attacked and killed by her troubled tenant Jerry Hanel, also known as Yarda. His mental illness spiraled into him shooting the two officers and setting fire to Cain's home -- a rampage that forever changed this tight-knit community. One couple who lost their home in the fire joined neighbors to lay flowers and comfort each other.
