Maui firefighters fought a brush fire Wednesday afternoon that led to a precautionary evacuation of people in the area of the old Pu’unene School. It also led to the day closure of the Central Maui Landfill. Hansen and Pulehu Road were shut down shortly after 12:30 p.m. Multiple firefighting units responded and worked to get the flames under control before it could spread. Fire officials said strong winds fanned the flames and three utility poles were damaged. No injuries were reported during the incident. At last check around 3:30 p.m., officials said the fire was about 90% contained, and crews were focused on mop-up operations. MFD said about 60 acres were burned.
