Residents near Liholiho Street in Wailuku were evacuated as a precaution on Tuesday night after PVC pipes resembling improvised explosive devices were found in a vehicle that had crashed in the area, police said Wednesday. At about 7:41 p.m., a 1996 Buick Le Sabre sedan was traveling eastbound on Liholiho Street when the driver lost control and collided into a rock wall along a driveway of a nearby residence, police found during a preliminary investigation. The driver, a 17-year-old male from Captain Cook, Hawaii island, and his three passengers — a 20-year-old Wailuku female, a 16-year-old Wailuku male and a 13-year-old Kahului male — were able to exit the vehicle before it caught fire. Residents in the area and fire personnel were able to contain and extinguish the fire.
