Haleakala Hwy brush fire burns 2-3 acres off Crater Road

A brush fire that started on Saturday evening off of Crater Road burned 2-3 acres. Although the fire is fully contained, crews continued mop-up operations. The fire was first reported at 5:25 p.m. on July 6, at 10800 Haleakala Hwy, in the area of Mile 8 along Crater Road. Crews worked in difficult terrain, assisted by Air 1 making water drops and stopping forward progress of the fire before sundown on Saturday. Crews continued to work overnight on hot spots as heavy equipment was used into the night to secure the perimeter. Crews and Air 1 continued to work on Sunday to extinguish hot spots and improve containment, with the fire 90% contained by Sunday night. The fire was declared 100% contained Monday, July 8, at 8:30 a.m.
