DeWitt police were dispatched to 308 8th Street around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday for what DeWitt Chief of Police Dave Porter described as a "police matter." Once there, investigators discovered "suspicious items" inside the home. The Quad Cities Bomb Squad and Hazmat teams were called in to assist in the investigation. The entire 300 block of 8th Street was blocked with orange cones, and yellow caution tape surrounded the home being investigated, which according to the Beacon Schneider real estate database, is owned by Nicholas Callahan. Members of the DeWitt Volunteer Fire Department were observed entering the home with breathing apparatus on. The suspicious items deemed not a threat and were not explosive or chemical in nature.
