A fire prompted the evacuation of a Cedar Rapids apartment building, Saturday afternoon. Authorities headed to 430 Jacolyn Drive Southwest, a 16-unit structure owned by Shamrock Capital Investments, just before 5:00 p.m. after a report that a bed had caught fire in unit five. "Upon arrival Engine Eight found a multi-unit residential structure with thick black smoke showing," said Battalion Chief Jason Andrews in a news release. "Crews simultaneously attacked the fire and evacuated all of the adjacent apartments." Once firefighters entered the burning unit they found a mattress and contents of the bedroom had caught flame. Andrews said crews were able to knock down the fire before it could spread to other apartments.
