A West Des Moines firefighter was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries Wednesday morning after responding to a house fire near the Valley Junction area.
Shortly before 6 a.m., crews responded to a fire at 408 11th St. after receiving a call from the homeowner, West Des Moines Fire Marshal Mike Whitsell said.
Whitsell said the homeowner was able to make it out of the house by the time they arrived. He said there was heavy smoke and "zero visibility" inside as crews worked to extinguish the fire.
One firefighter was injured and taken to the hospital. Whitsell said he was expected to be released later in the morning.
The fire left the home with extensive smoke and fire damage to the interior, he said.
Crews left the scene around 8 a.m. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
