The Humboldt Fire Department was called to a report of smoke and a structure fire at 1005 Terrace Drive Wednesday night at approximately 5:52 p.m. The department sent two fire engines and a pumper truck to the street located one block north of Highway 3. When firefighters arrived, smoke was coming out of the two-story wood-frame house owned by Malea Brown. Brown had been living in the home with her boyfriend, Michael Wiuff (pronounced View). Humboldt County Sheriff Dean Kruger reported that the home had been foreclosed up and was sold at a sheriff sale recently. Kruger said the couple was to be moved out by 8 a.m. Thursday. Neither Brown nor Wiuff were home at the time of the fire. According to Humboldt Fire Chief Jim Gronbach, the fire started in the basement.
