The City of Cedar Falls is providing an update on the brush fire at the Seasonal Compost Facility. The brush fire caused a temporary closure of the facility. The cause of the fire has not been determined. Both Cedar Falls Public Safety and Cedar Falls Public Works acted immediately to contain the fire to an isolated area. Because of the fire's initial size and complexity, it has been allowed to burn in order to decrease the intensity of smoldering smoke. City officials have been watching the area regularly throughout the week. The wind from the northeast this week has caused smoke to drift into Downtown and residential areas of Cedar Falls. It is being reported that in consultation with the Black Hawk County Health Department, residents with respiratory sensitivities should stay inside until the smoke dissipates in the coming days. The Iowa DNR is advised of the situation.
