Buffalo Center Fire Chief Brian Blodgett, a former physics and chemistry teacher, said one of the reasons he joined the department is “the science of fire is interesting to me.” “That’s what’s neat about the fire department,” he said. “I get to have a practical usage of my science degree.” Blodgett, whose stepfather was a firefighter in Callendar, joined the Buffalo Center volunteer fire department in 1995 while he was still teaching in the North Iowa Community School District. He now runs his own business, Next Generation Technologies. He has been the Buffalo Center fire chief for the past dozen years or so. “It’s a wonderful group of people to be with,” he said. What Blodgett likes best about being a firefighter is the relationships he has developed with the other members of the department, who come from all walks of life.
