Local fire chief Dennis Doan was sworn in as the newest member of the Boise school board Monday night. Trustees selected Doan from a pool of four finalists. He will fill out the remainder of former school board member Doug Park’s term, which runs through September 2020. Park resigned shortly after the September election. In his application, Doan said his experience as fire chief puts him in a position to understand large organizations, negotiations, budgeting, union and labor relations and policy goals. “As a leader in Boise for over 27 years I have built professional and effective relationships with city, county and state leaders,” he wrote. He also called the district the best in Idaho and said he was proud that his son and daughter attend one of the district’s high schools. Doan was among six applicants who sought the position. After the applicants made an initial presentation to the school board, the field was narrowed to four finalists. Those four finalists appeared for follow-up meetings with the school board Oct. 2. The other three finalists were Mary Kemp, Krista McIntyre and Brett Shelton.
