VIDEO: "Just over a year ago we found out that my wife had cancer. Through our research with what's healthy for her, we came across learning that a lot of dyes do cause cancer," said Caldwell Fire Captain Marc Maiello.
Captain Maiello is referring to the dyes found in various sports drinks that Caldwell firefighters were consuming daily. That is, until they discovered something strange. "As they opened it (the sports drinks) they noticed there was a slime or a sludge that was floating in the drink," said Captain Maiello. He says some of the firefighters unknowingly drank from the effected plastic bottles, left in a truck outside.
The gooey drinks weren't the only thing worrying Captain Maiello. He said some of their colored sports drinks turned completely clear when exposed to UV light. He said other colored sports drinks, purchased at the time as those that turned clear, maintained their color when stored in a cool, dry place.
