A grass fire has burned an estimated 40,000 acres near the Idaho/Oregon border, the Bureau of Land Management reports.
The fire started Wednesday night, and I-84 was initially closed due to the smoke. The fire has not been contained or controlled yet, but due to lighter winds, the fire is not expected to spread as much as it did Wednesday.
“The winds calmed about 3 a.m. which gave us a good chance to get around the hot spots on the fire,” said Justin Fenton, Vale BLM fire duty officer. The cooler temperatures Wednedsay are expected to help officials control the blaze.
No injuries or structural damages have been reported. Firefighters from several organizations and two water tenders and dozers are on the scene.
